The Melted Potter

We have three new candles that we poured into small pots made by The Melted Potter (aka Shannon Barr).  These pots have beautiful glazes with perfect colors for fall.  The scents we chose for Shannon’s vases are Pumpkin Spice, Patchouli, and Cinnamon.  They are available to purchase on our website:

We look forward to more of Shannon’s creations in the future!

Making Candles in 1970

Back in the early 1970s was the first time I tried making candles.  No soy wax then!  I bought a big chunk of white paraffin and chopped it up into smaller chunks with an ice pick.  I melted these pieces in tin cans sitting in a large aluminum tray set up as a sort of double boiler arrangement.  I made different colors in the tin cans and poured layers of colored melted wax into milk cartons I had saved up.  It was always a surprise when I peeled off the carton after the wax had cooled to see if the candle came out beautiful or not so great.  These candles were very pretty when burning as the flame glowed through the layers of colored wax.  I would not have predicted that 40 years later I would again be pouring candles under the name of Twilight Candle Shop and selling them on the Internet!  (the Inter..what???)  Using soy wax is much easier to deal with and much healthier to burn.  Progress indeed!  www.twilightcandleshop.com

Why soy is simply the best choice

I came across this article and was pleased to see how many reasons they came up with for why soy candles are simply the best choice.  Take a look and see why it is not just a fad.  I am surprised when we are at craft shows that many people still have not heard of soy wax.  Check out the many reasons to use soy instead of paraffin:

Wilderness Artist

I had the pleasure of meeting this artist recently and would like to pass on this recommendation to anyone who loves nature.  Rhea Knight takes her own photographs of scenes in West Virginia and out in the American West.  She uses these photos to paint the scenes in fine detail.  The result is a very realistic picture that almost looks like a photograph, yet it captures the beauty and feeling of the scene much better than a photograph ever could.  I think her work is truly unique and very impressive.  She sells prints of all her originals.  Check out her website here:  http://www.yessy.com/rheaknight/gallery.html?r=308983773 I’d love to hear your comments on this blog!  Thanks – Joanne

Talented Designer

If you like fashion, you should definitely check out the work of Joanna Baker!  She is breaking into the “scene” after coming all the way from Damascus, Maryland, to New York City.  She has a wealth of natural talent and has been further trained at Parsons.  I’m just trying to help spread the word.  Take a look:  http://www.joanna-baker.blogspot.com/

Research

Check out our page on Facebook http://www.facebook.com/#!/twilightcandleshop where I am trying to get a discussion going about the differences between soy wax and paraffin.  There are a lot of opinions out there — I have a few of my own!  I would like to hear from more people who have studied this.  You will see a couple links on our website http://www.twilightcandleshop.com/links.html to scientific research on the topic.  I want to hear from you if you are aware of more studies that have been done!  Thanks for your input.  -Joanne
